Asahikawa offers a different proposition from a purpose-built ski resort. It is Hokkaido's second-largest city, with excellent restaurants, hospitals, shops and practical housing, yet Kamui Ski Links, Asahidake, Pippu and Furano are all within day-trip range. For owners who enjoy exploring several mountains, it is an unusually capable base.
The city sits beside the Daisetsuzan range in one of Japan's coldest inhabited regions. Winters are serious, but so are the rewards: reliably light snow, fewer international crowds than Niseko and a food scene with enough depth for year-round living.
Spring arrives with riverside blossom and the gradual reopening of high mountain roads. Summer is warm but less humid than much of Japan, making it a good base for Daisetsuzan hiking and drives through Biei's farm country. Autumn begins remarkably early on the highest peaks, then spreads into the city. Winter is long and cold, with snow covering Asahikawa itself and a rotating choice of nearby ski areas depending on wind, visibility and snowfall.
Asahikawa's soy-based ramen is one of Hokkaido's great regional styles, traditionally enriched with a layer of oil that keeps the soup hot. Also look for shinkoyaki, a substantial grilled half-chicken, alongside local sake, seafood and produce from the Kamikawa basin. The city's many independent izakaya make it a particularly good base for people who want more evening choice than a small ski village can provide.
Asahikawa is Hokkaido's second city, so its visitors are a mix rather than a single crowd. They come for Asahiyama Zoo and its winter penguin walks, for Asahikawa's soy-based ramen, for the ropeway up Asahidake in Daisetsuzan's national park, and as the gateway to Biei and Furano. Winter adds Kamui Ski Links and the backcountry on Asahidake. Both scores are high, but the city also has plenty of hotels to absorb them. For a short let, a house in town competes with every business hotel; one out towards Higashikawa and Asahidake, with the mountain on the doorstep, has something the hotels can't offer.

The city offers ordinary houses and apartments rather than primarily resort stock, often with more space and services for the money. Central neighbourhoods favour walkability; western areas can shorten the drive to Kamui; eastern and southern locations improve access towards Asahidake, Biei and Furano.
Heating performance is critical at temperatures that can fall below -20°C. Check insulation, double or triple glazing, boiler age, fuel type, pipe protection and the position of outdoor equipment. Snow clearing, off-street parking and municipal road priority all affect winter convenience. The tradeoff is clear: you will drive to ski, but you return to a functioning city.
Half the ski homes listed here ask between ¥2,500,000 and ¥14,800,000, and the middle of the market sits around ¥5,400,000.
13 are within about 15 minutes’ drive of a ski area, 81 within 30 minutes and every one within the hour, measured along real roads to Kamui Ski Links, Asahidake and Kurodake and their neighbours. Every listing shows its own drive times on the Powder Zone map.

Yes. Japan has no general restriction on foreigners buying houses or land, and you do not need to live there. Our guide to buying a ski home in Japan walks through the process and the costs on top of the price.
