Food and drink

Otaru is one of Hokkaido's classic seafood cities, best known for sushi, crab, sea urchin and seasonal fish. Herring shaped the port's early wealth and still appears in local dishes. Other specialities include ankake yakisoba, noodles beneath a thick seafood sauce, plus excellent cakes, confectionery, beer and nearby Yoichi wine and whisky.

For a short let, the trick is giving people a reason to stay the night: festival week, a ski base for Kiroro, or a sea view the hotels can't match.

Neighbourhood and topography matter enormously. A hillside home may have exceptional harbour views but a steep, difficult winter approach; flatter central areas trade views for convenience. Confirm whether the road is municipally cleared, where snow can be placed and whether retaining walls or exterior stairs require work.

Historic houses can be attractive but need careful surveys for insulation, structure, moisture and roof condition. Salt air near the coast accelerates corrosion. Otaru's shrinking population can create low asking prices in outer districts, but resale and rental demand vary sharply.
