Inawashiro sits between the broad blue waters of Lake Inawashiro and the volcanic slopes of Mount Bandai. It feels properly rural, with rice fields, mountain villages and deep winter snow, yet Tokyo is only around two and a half hours away by train.
Lake Inawashiro is Japan's fourth-largest lake and the defining feature of the area. In summer, its beaches and clear water give the town an almost coastal atmosphere. In winter, the mountain takes over, with several ski areas within easy driving distance and snowy views across the lake.
Inawashiro changes dramatically through the year. Spring arrives later than in Tokyo, with snow still visible on Mount Bandai as cherry trees flower around the lake. The kilometre-long cherry corridor beside the Kannonji River is the local highlight, usually reaching its best in late April. Summer shifts life towards Lake Inawashiro, where swimming, camping, kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing complement hiking and cycling around Mount Bandai.
Autumn brings cool, clear weather, golden rice fields and vivid colour across the Bandai mountains. It is arguably the best season for scenic drives and exploring the smaller villages surrounding the lake. Then winter transforms the area again. Several ski resorts are within easy driving distance, while migrating swans gather along the lakeshore and wind-blown spray freezes into unusual ice formations at Tenjinhama. Unlike many purpose-built ski destinations, Inawashiro has a reason to visit in every season.

Inawashiro proudly calls itself a "town of soba." Buckwheat grows well in its cool climate, and small restaurants across the area serve locally made noodles, chilled in summer or in steaming broth after skiing.
The wider Aizu region adds plenty more to try, including sauce katsudon, where a crispy pork cutlet is dipped in a sweet savoury sauce and served over rice. Other regional favourites include kozuyu, a traditional clear soup served on special occasions, and basashi, thinly sliced horse sashimi. Locally grown rice, mountain vegetables and Fukushima sake round out a food scene that is simple, hearty and distinctly regional.
Inawashiro is a Japanese getaway first and a ski town second. Families drive up from Koriyama and Tokyo for the lake in summer, the beaches, the boats and the cool mountain air under Mount Bandai, and for Aizu's castle town and the Goshiki-numa ponds nearby. Winter brings weekend skiers to Alts Bandai and Inawashiro, and swans to the lake. Overseas visitors haven't found it yet, so the international score is low. If you're thinking about a short let, plan around Japanese school holidays and long weekends: July and August on the lake, and Saturdays in ski season. It's a market of local regulars, not a winter-long foreign crowd.

Mostly Japanese. Mostly a secret.
Inawashiro offers more space and lower property prices than Japan's internationally known ski towns. It also has genuine four-season appeal rather than depending entirely on the winter market.
The important property questions concern snow. Check who clears the access road, where cleared snow can be stored, whether the roof sheds snow onto entrances or neighbouring land, and if the plumbing has been properly winterised.
Location also matters. Homes near central Inawashiro offer easier access to supermarkets, restaurants and the train station. Properties towards Mount Bandai and the ski areas can provide better views, more land and shorter drives to the lifts, although they will often receive heavier snow and require more winter maintenance.

Half the ski homes listed here ask between ¥4,750,000 and ¥15,250,000, and the middle of the market sits around ¥6,250,000.
33 are within about 15 minutes’ drive of a ski area, and every one within 30 minutes, measured along real roads to Inawashiro, Listel Ski Fantasia and Nekoma Mountain and their neighbours. Every listing shows its own drive times on the Powder Zone map.

Yes. Japan has no general restriction on foreigners buying houses or land, and you do not need to live there. Our guide to buying a ski home in Japan walks through the process and the costs on top of the price.
